As the Opposition continues to criticise the selection of ten aldermen in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the Congress today claimed that where responsibility matters, Congress workers are chosen. Welcoming the aldermen in a function here, Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee chairperson Jai Prakash Agarwal said all the nominated ones were Congress workers at the grassroots level. “Whenever such vacancies have aroused, Congress workers were entrusted with important responsibility,” he said. The chosen ones are Parvez Mian, Komalam Nair, Sudesh Sangwan, Abdul Qayyum, S K Puri, H K Jindal, L C Chandelia, Sanjay Ghaloth, S S Duggal and Yogesh Kumar Chaudhary. Attacking BJP, Mr Agarwal said the BJP indulged only in empty political rhetoric as its sole purpose was to stay put in power. According to the BJP, the appointment of the aldermen is a political ploy by the Sheila Dikshit government keeping in view the upcoming MCD elections. Calling them ‘inexperienced’, the saffron party claimed that the nominated ten neither have any experience of administration of Corporation nor possess special knowledge in any area.
An alderman is a member of a municipal assembly or council who is not elected by popular vote but is nominated by the Lieutenant Governor under Delhi Municipal Corporation Act(DMC) Act from among social workers or experts in different fields. They do not have voting rights. The nomination is generally done at the beginning of the term of a Corporation. However, there was some controversy over the list of aldermen nominated after 2007 MCD polls and since then the process was on hold. The current nomination follows recommendations by the Delhi government.
