Know Jai Prakash Agarwal

Shri Jai Prakash Agarwal comes from a family of freedom fighters with close ties to India’s oldest and largest democratic political party, the Indian National Congress. Under the leadership of the great freedom fighters of the Indian National Congress, the struggle for Indian independence was spearheaded. His father Shri Ram Charan Agarwal, was an eminent freedom fighter.

Inspired by the ideals of nationalism, the values of freedom and justice, he entered public life during his college days. An active students’ leader, he was elected as President of Youth Congress, Delhi District in 1972, thus beginning his political journey.

He is alumnus of Hansraj College of Delhi University.

He was elected as a Councillor in Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections in 1983 and became Deputy Mayor of Delhi. In 1984 he was elected Chairman of the Standing Committee and also became Leader of the Congress Party in MCD. He became Vice President, Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee in 1992.

He has been a member of All India Congress Committee since 1984 and was President of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee from 2007. He was again given responsibility to head the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee in 2010.

Shri J. P. Agarwal has served as a member of both the Houses of Parliament for five terms. He was first elected to the 8th Lok Sabha in 1984. He re-elected in 1989 (9th Lok Sabha), 1996 (11th Lok Sabha) and 2009 (15th Lok Sabha).

He was nominated by the Congress party to Rajya Sabha in 2006 from Delhi.

Shri Agarwal was nominated as member of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the highest decision-making body of the Indian National Congress and also Incharge Madhya Pradesh.

During his long stint as a Parliamentarian, Shri Aggarwal was part of many Consultative and Parliamentary Committees; Estimate Committee (1985, 1989), Committee on Defence (2006) and Urban Development Committee. He was also a member of Joint Parliamentary Committee on Food Management in Parliament House Complex.

He has many firsts to his name as a Parliamentarian from Delhi;

1  He is the first person from Delhi to be elected to both the Houses of Parliament.

2  He is the first Delhi-born member of Parliament to serve five terms.

3  He is the first Member of Parliament from Delhi to Chair the House Committee of both Lok Sabha and  Rajya Sabha.

  • As an experienced politician and social worker, he has earned love and trust from his constituents and represents highest moral values in public life, secularism, faith in parliamentary democracy and, social justice with inclusive growth.
  • He also heads a number of social, cultural and business institutions. He is the Chair of the India-Nepal Parliamentary Friendship Group and a member of the Indo-Australia and India-Bhutan Parliamentarians Friendship Group.
  • He is an avid traveller and has travelled extensively across continents.His love of nature is famous and an ardent advocate for environmental protection. He is a music lover and enjoys both Indian classical and ghazals equally. He enjoys playing carom, cricket, football and hockey.
  • Shri J. P. Agarwal was born on November 11, 1944 in Delhi. He is married to Sarita Agrawal and has two sons named Mudit and Amit.
